Planning and use

Lifting operations must be properly planned, supervised and carried out safely by competent people. Equipment must suit the load and task, have appropriate markings and be checked before use. Defective equipment must be withdrawn from service.

Thorough examination

Where LOLER applies, arrange examination by a competent person at the appropriate interval: normally six months for lifting accessories and equipment lifting people, and twelve months for other lifting equipment, or in accordance with a competent person’s examination scheme. Installation, exceptional circumstances and other legal triggers may require further examination. A universal annual inspection rule is not sufficient.

Records and action

Keep examination and inspection records for the periods required by law, track due dates and act on defects within the required timescale. Maintenance and pre-use checks do not replace statutory thorough examination.
