Battery Recycling for Businesses: Alkaline, Lead-Acid, Lithium-ion and Ni-Cd

Guidance reviewed 6 October 2026.

Businesses use many battery types, and a collection should reflect what is actually in the load. The markings on the casing and a clear photograph are often more useful than a guess based on size.

Common battery chemistries at work

  • Alkaline: familiar AA, AAA, C, D and 9V batteries, often from small devices and controls.
  • Lead-acid: commonly found in vehicle starter batteries and some backup power systems.
  • Lithium-ion: rechargeable packs in laptops, mobile equipment and many cordless tools.
  • Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd): may appear in older rechargeable equipment and some emergency lighting systems.
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH): used in rechargeable cells and certain equipment packs.

These examples are clues, not a definitive identification. The model, chemistry label and intended use help confirm the correct battery route.

Chemistry and legal category are different

Environment Agency technical guidance distinguishes portable, automotive and industrial batteries. An electric vehicle traction battery is not classed as an automotive starter battery simply because it comes from a car. The intended use matters as well as the battery’s appearance.

For a collection enquiry, tell us where the batteries came from if you know. “Laptop packs”, “vehicle starter batteries” or “emergency light batteries” is a helpful beginning.

Can mixed batteries be collected?

Quality Waste can assess mixed battery loads. Send an overall photo and any readable labels so the team can confirm acceptance and preparation. Do not add damaged, leaking or swollen batteries into an ordinary mixed container.

Drums and larger storage solutions

We can discuss battery storage solutions such as suitable drums and pallet boxes for larger quantities. The container and packing must be appropriate to the battery types and condition; the name or volume of a container alone does not establish that it is suitable.

Regular collections can be arranged where batteries build up throughout the year. Explain whether you prefer an agreed schedule or collection when the suitable container is full.

How much does business battery recycling cost?

Pricing depends on battery type, quantity and collection arrangements and may be assessed by weight or drum. If you do not know the weight, describe the boxes or drums you have. We will confirm any further information needed.
