Your Hazardous Waste Guide
ASK OUR FRIENDLY TEAM →What Makes Waste Hazardous?
Waste is hazardous when its classification or properties require hazardous waste controls. It may be flammable, toxic, corrosive, infectious or harmful to the environment. Some waste types have an absolute hazardous entry; others need information about their substances and concentrations. The source of the waste also matters.
How Can I Tell If My Waste Is Hazardous?
Start with the product name, how it was used and any labels or safety data sheet. Hazard symbols are useful clues, but a product label alone does not settle the waste classification. Used, mixed or contaminated material may differ from the original product. Never smell, taste, burn or mix waste to identify it.
Does “Non-Hazardous” Mean Safe for Any Bin?
No. Batteries, electrical equipment and POPs waste can need separate handling even when a particular waste code is non-hazardous. Fire risk, dangerous goods transport rules and disposal restrictions are separate questions.
What Should I Send My Hazardous Waste Contractor?
Send some photos of the containers and readable labels, together with the product name if known. A safety data sheet can help with chemical waste. For unknown drums or mixed waste, tell us what you know without opening containers or combining contents.
What Paperwork Will I Need?
Hazardous waste normally moves with a consignment note; Scotland uses a Special Waste Consignment Note. The details depend on the collection location and movement. A Certificate of Destruction records a destruction service and does not replace the movement documents. Try our waste paperwork checker.
