How to Destroy Expired, Recalled and Unsellable Stock

Guidance reviewed 11 October 2026.

A product recall or warehouse full of unsellable stock needs a clear plan. Secure stock destruction helps businesses remove goods that must not return to shops or online marketplaces, while keeping evidence of what happened. The right approach depends on the products—not just the number of pallets.

Start by separating the stock

Keep recalled, damaged and expired goods away from saleable lines. Make the status clear to warehouse and fulfilment staff. If stock is subject to a recall, follow the recall instructions and preserve the records your business needs; do not let a clearance interrupt that process.

Why an ordinary rubbish collection may not be enough

Cosmetics, batteries, electrical products, food and chemicals can require different handling. A mixed pallet should not be treated as a single general waste stream without checking its contents. Branded packaging can also be important: the product and its box may both need destruction to stop them being reused for misleading sales.

What evidence will you receive?

Quality Waste includes a Certificate of Destruction with its secure product destruction service. This documents the destruction service; it is not a replacement for applicable waste paperwork. Asset-level or SKU-level reconciliation, photographs and witnessed work are additional requirements to discuss separately.

Does destruction mean nothing is recycled?

Not necessarily. Product destruction and material recovery can be compatible. A product can be made unusable while suitable materials are separated for recycling. The route depends on contamination, hazardous contents and how secure destruction must be achieved. Some waste needs another treatment route.

What makes a useful enquiry?

Tell us the product type and whether it is recalled, damaged, expired or surplus. A rough pallet count and some photos are normally a better starting point than a long spreadsheet. Mention food, liquids, aerosols or batteries, and any records your recall team needs.

For returned online orders, our e-commerce returns disposal service can help with the stock you cannot put back on sale. Delivery arrangements should be agreed before returns are directed to us.
