How to Dispose of PPE and Contaminated Workwear

Guidance reviewed 11 October 2026.

Unused masks in storage and gloves contaminated during work are very different waste. PPE disposal depends on what the items are made from, how they were used and whether they carry chemical, medicinal or infectious contamination. Start with that distinction rather than treating every bag alike.

Unused surplus PPE

Businesses may have obsolete masks, gloves, aprons or protective clothing after a change in specification. Check whether safe, usable stock has a suitable reuse option before discarding it. Expired or unsuitable safety equipment must not be passed on as if it still offers the required protection.

Used PPE needs its own route

Describe what the items have been exposed to. Chemical-contaminated gloves, infectious healthcare PPE and ordinary non-contaminated workwear may need different handling. Not every used mask is clinical waste, and not every glove can go into general waste. Classification should reflect the actual contamination.

Keep streams separate at the workplace

Use the containers and segregation arrangements appropriate to your activity. Do not mix sharps into bags of PPE or add chemical containers to clothing waste. For healthcare settings, follow your organisation’s healthcare waste procedures. Staff should not reopen bags to sort contaminated items without proper controls.

Can PPE be recycled?

Some clean materials have specialist recycling options, but mixed fabrics, disposable products and contamination can make recovery difficult. A recycling claim needs to match the particular material and route. Do not assume that a plastic-looking glove belongs in a normal plastics bin.

Getting help with a business clearance

Quality Waste offers PPE and contaminated waste disposal. Tell us whether the stock is unused or used, and what contamination is involved. A rough bag, box or pallet count helps us discuss collection; do not handle contaminated items just to take a closer photo.

If secure destruction of unwanted stock is required, a Certificate of Destruction is included with that destruction service. This does not replace applicable healthcare or hazardous waste records.
