The UK ban on selling and supplying single-use vapes took effect on 1 June 2025. For retailers, wholesalers and importers, remaining stock became a waste management issue as well as a sales issue.

Leftover stock must be kept out of sale

GOV.UK’s business guidance says businesses must arrange recycling of leftover single-use vapes. Separate the stock from other goods, mark it as unsellable and remove it from the shop floor or online store while arranging collection. The ban covers single-use products with and without nicotine.

This is a retrospective article about the June 2025 ban. A product’s appearance or marketing description alone is not enough to establish that it meets the rules for a reusable vape; check the official definitions if you still sell vaping products.

Why a vape is not ordinary rubbish

Vapes combine electrical components, a battery and other materials. A battery hidden inside a small device can be overlooked when staff clear a counter, storeroom or smoking area. Placing it in general rubbish sends those components into a collection route that was not designed for them.

Government guidance calls for vape bins and regular recycling collections. Keep vape devices separate from general waste, mixed dry recycling and ordinary stock returns unless the receiving service has specifically confirmed acceptance.

Make the process clear to your team

  • Assign a responsible person for returned and unsellable vape products.
  • Keep a clear distinction between saleable goods and waste awaiting collection.
  • Use a collection arrangement designed for vapes; do not improvise a general-purpose bin.
  • Report known damage, leakage or battery swelling to your collection provider before booking.

Do not dismantle devices or remove integrated batteries as an informal stock-clearing exercise. Confirm preparation with a competent provider before handling the load.

Returned devices still need a route

The end of single-use vape sales does not remove the need to manage customer returns or discarded reusable devices. Review the system at tills, returns desks and staff areas, and make sure the collection frequency prevents waste accumulating.
