Waste Collection Preparation Checklist

Follow the instructions for your agreed collection. Skip anything that does not apply. This checklist is a reminder, not a packaging, lifting or transport approval.

1. Before Collection Day

Confirm the collectionCheck the date, collection address and which items are included. Tell us if anything has changed.Choose a site contactMake sure someone knows the collection arrangements and can help the driver find the waste.Flag access restrictionsLet us know about gates, stairs, narrow entrances, parking restrictions or timed access.

2. Pallets, Bins & Access

Follow the agreed packing instructionsUse suitable containers or sound pallets where agreed. Keep loads stable and do not overfill bins or leave items protruding.Agree how the load will be movedTell us if a forklift, tail lift or other help is needed. Do not assume the driver can lift heavy items or move pallets over steps or uneven ground.Keep the route clearMake the agreed collection point accessible. Keep waste clear of exits and do not block footpaths or emergency access.

3. Keep Waste Types Separate

Separate batteries and lampsKeep loose batteries and fluorescent tubes out of general waste and ordinary mixed WEEE bins. Use the separate packaging agreed with your collector.Report damage or contaminationTell us about swollen batteries, broken lamps, leaks or chemical and medical contamination before packing. Do not open or dismantle items to investigate.Keep chemicals and POPs waste identifiableDo not mix oil, paint or chemicals. Keep suspected POPs furniture apart from other waste and do not strip covers or foam yourself.

4. IT Equipment & Handover

Back up files you needBefore computer or laptop disposal, save any required data and get your organisation’s approval to release the equipment. Data-bearing media are shredded; do not rely on recovering files afterwards.Keep items for collection togetherSeparate the agreed waste from equipment or stock you are keeping. Make sure colleagues know what is being collected.Keep your collection recordsCheck the relevant waste transfer or consignment paperwork and retain your copy. Data-bearing media are shredded as standard, with a Certificate of Data Destruction included.
