Guidance reviewed 11 October 2026.
An office kitchen fridge, a supermarket display cabinet and a restaurant cold room all provide cooling, but they are not interchangeable when it comes to disposal. Business fridge recycling is simpler when the collector knows the appliance type and whether specialist disconnection is needed.
Domestic-style fridges used at work
A standard fridge or freezer in an office, staff kitchen or rental business still needs a business waste arrangement when the business discards it. Its domestic appearance does not turn commercial waste into a household load. Tell us the number of units and where they are stored.
Commercial cabinets and display refrigeration
Upright catering fridges, chest freezers, drinks chillers and refrigerated display units differ in size, weight and refrigeration design. Some are self-contained; others are connected to remote systems. Send some photos, including the rating plate if accessible, rather than trying to dismantle the equipment.
Cold rooms and connected systems
A built-in cold room may involve panels, a refrigeration plant and fixed services. It needs a removal plan suited to the installation. Where F-gas rules apply, appropriately qualified personnel must carry out relevant refrigerant work. Do not release gases or cut pipework to make removal easier.
Laboratory and medical fridges
Previous use matters. Laboratory fridges need a decontamination certificate before our collection, and chemical, medical or biological contamination must be identified. Empty-looking shelves do not prove that an appliance is decontaminated. Tell us what it was used for so the correct route can be considered.
What changes the collection price?
The appliance type, number of units, access and any specialist removal work can affect the cost. A ground-floor kitchen fridge is a different job from connected equipment on an upper floor. Quality Waste offers commercial fridge and freezer disposal and can help you arrange a practical collection.
If you are disposing of your own fridge at home, check council or retailer take-back options. Businesses should confirm acceptance rather than turning up at a household recycling centre.
